History of the Draconic Community - 2001 - present
On April 26 2001, Pattarchus StormWind created the website Nexus-Draconis. The website was in German and became a resource for German-speaking draconics. Pattarchus StormWind, for the website, also translated Baxil’s Draconity FAQ from English to German.[1]
Sometime before June 2nd 2001 the website called Tysharina’s Lair: Home of the Dragon Dancer. The website was primarily about the legends of dragons, dragon magic, dragons in media, and similar plus a forum for people to discus things related to dragons. The website also had some information of draconity and the creator was draconic.[2]
On August 3rd 2001, Alfandria was created on Livejournal. It was created to be an extension of Alt.fan.dragons for members to discus and interact on Livejournal was well. Included in the groups interests were the words "anthropomorphic," dragons," "furry," "otherkin," "shapeshifter," "shapeshifting," "shifters," "therianthropy," "wereism," and "wyvern." The Livejournal is still semi-active as of 2014 though it has become pronominally used as a place for updates on the Alfandria MUCK.[3]
On November 14th 2001, the Yahoo Group was created Council De Draconius was created.[4]
On February 3rd 2002, the Yahoo Group, Winged Chat was created as a place for all and any otherkin with wings including dragons.[5]
On February 12 2002, the Yahoo Group, Dragon’s Sky was created.[6]
On May 31st 2002, The Yahoo Group was created called Anti-Fluff DragonKin. The group description stated the group was intended for draconics or dragonkin who were tried of groups filled with people under 18, and intended for people who were agnostic or atheist who were tired of being surrounded by neopagans. Stating, “Fluffiness is not allowed here.”[7]
In 2003, the website Draconomicon.com was created by T-Sar-Goth. The website was created primarily for draconic and fans of dragons. The website included a forum, a gallery, a journal, and other features.[8]
On February 4th 2003, the Livejournal community called The Dragons : By Dragons, For Dragons, About Dragons was created. The group was primarily created for draconics but also as a place for people who wanted to talk about dragons in general as well.[9]
On May 2003, Draconity.org was created as website for draconic, fans of dragons, and other people who are interested in topics related to dragons by T-Sar-Goth. The website includes a forum and chat among other features. The website was a recreation and overhaul of the website Draconomicon.com after the original admin of that site no longer had time for it and sloth took over command.[10]
On July 24th 2003, the Yahoo Group Dragon Spirit was created where people could discuss anything related to dragons. This included both draconics and magick related to dragons. The group was pretty active since its creation up until 2010.[11]
In October 2003, a dragonkin by the calling Starblade created a thread on otherkin in a Livejournal community for debates. The thread began with Starblade giving his personal views of being a “dragon spiritually” and so thus would fit under the term otherkin which then spawned a large debate over otherkin. From that debate the phrase, “F**k you, I’m a dragon” was coined. Its unclear how the phrase actually came about as no one in the debate on otherkin, not even Starblade, say the phrase.[12]The earliest use of the phrase did not come until some days after the debate and by someone who has been debating against the idea of otherkin.[13] Nevertheless, the coining of the phrase is often attributed to Starblade even though its more accurate to say helped inspire the phrase.[14]
On March 2nd 2004, the group Draconics was created on Livejournal. The group was created both fans of dragons and people who identified as dragons. In the description it stated related groups included several draconic community groups as well as a group for otherkin and another for therianthropes (along with a few other groups).[15]
Also on the same day of March 2nd 2004 the Livejounral community called We Are Dragon was created.[16]
In March 16th 2004, on Draconomicon.com a member of the forum by the name of AtomicDragon conducted a survey on draconity which he planned on using to write an academic paper for California Tech.[17] The survey results and if the paper was published is currently unknown.
On May 1st 2004, the Yahoo group called Goodly’s Draconic Group. The group was never very active at all and became completely inactive after August 2005.[18]
On May 20th 2004 the Yahoo group The Dragon’s Universe was created. The group’s description included, "We are a group of Dragons and Otherkin of various races who believe in the freedom to express ourselves in the quiet of this group." [19]
On August 2nd 2004 the Yahoo group called Draconic Otherkin was created however the group was very small and not very active at all with its last activity occurring back in June 2008.[20]
On October 24 2004 the Yahoo group Dragon Clan was created. The group was generally active until 2009 whereas afterward it mostly died.[21]
On January 30th 2005, a Yahoo Group called Dragon’s Den: Draconian Society was created. The group has over 80 members and was off and on active for many years. In the group’s description it uses the word draconian was used rather than draconic, plus stated the group was welcome to people from the vampire and other kin community as well.[22]
On January 25th 2005 an entry called “Draconity” was added to Wikipedia. This new entry described draconity as a state where “people who believe themselves to be a dragon in a biological, psychological and/or a spiritual sense.” The entry’s first incarnation also does make mention that the draconity “may be viewed as a subset of otherkin.”[23]
On January 30th 2005, the Yahoo Group, Dragon’s Den: Draconian Society was created. The group used the word “draconian” rather than draconic or dragonkin. The group description also made a distinction between the otherkin community and the “draconian” community.[24]
Between July 14th and 18th 2005, a gathering for draconics took place in Tennessee. Called the Dragon Gathering, the draconic camped out throughout the event.[25]
On December 18th 2006, the newspaper Minneapolis Star Tribune published an article about dragons in media. However at one point made a mention of dragon otherkin and mentioned Draconic.com. The article directly quoted from the website.[26]
On November 20th 2007 the video “Otherkin, Furries, and Animal Totems” was posted by a man being critical of furries, otherkin, and therians. The creator conflated being otherkin with “Native American spirituality” and “totem animals.” The creator of the video used the term therians to describe specifically those who identified as animals. He also claimed that therianthropy was actually shamanism. Thinking that otherkin are people believe they are “giving themselves up to an animal spirit” rather than identifying as nonhuman themselves. He also commented on the high number of wolves, foxes, and dragons compared to anything else.[27]
On November 26th 2007, a dragonkin by the username SpiritRunner6 replied to the video on the topic of otherkin (of which dragonkin are included) by anther Youtuber whose username was takamizuna. In the video he went on to post a few other videos on otherkin and his personal experiences. He is one of the earliest otherkin to post videos on Youtube about the topic.[28]
On January 21st 2010, the entry “Draconity” on Wikipedia was removed and redirected into the entry Otherkin.[29]
On September 22nd 2010, the dragonkin Starblade, whose real life name was Mathew Paul F. died at the age of 26 after being stabbed at a friends apartment. The suspect, James Torrey Hill had killed Matthew’s because he wished to kill someone and his motivation was not related to Matthew’s draconity. [30] [31]
On July16th 2014 the forum, Ivory Tower was created as a place for dragonkin/draconic to interact and discuss.[32]
