A History of the Draconic Community - 1993 to 2000
On December 1st 1993 the newsgroup alt.fan.dragons was created by a person going the handle ExistingPhantom. The original intent behind the creation of the newsgroup was for a place to discus anything and everything related to dragons from folklore to modern fiction and across kinds of media. Alt.fan.dragons would later go on to be sometimes abbreviated as AFD as well as gain the nickname Alfandria by users.[1]
Already within days of the newsgroup being created there were already threads being made of people outright claiming to have been a dragon in a past life or implying that they were somehow dragons in this life. In one thread on December 3rd someone asked if others had similar experiences or memories to share, however, the thread was met with no response.[2] In another thread stated that same day several other people claimed to be dragons in this life when someone made a thread asking if “Anyone know any good stories about how dragonkind became extinct?”[3] On December 7th a thread was created by someone who was skeptical of the people who had begun claiming to be dragons within a few days of the newsgroup being created. Asking “how in hades do you know that you are a dragon and if you know that you are let see some proof” among other things such as the possibility of human/dragon hybrids and people shapeshifting into dragons. The responses given ranged from some people stating they were dragons disguised as humans and that they could shape shift to other people coming at it from a folklore standpoint to a few stating it was a feeling they had.[4] In a different thread posted December 10th, someone began with stating that "I believe myself to be actually a Dragon, at least in the astral-type sense" and added at the end, "just think how your life would be wrecked by waking up with almost complete amnesia in the body of a short mammel [sic]." This thread, similar to the thread posted on the 3rd also met no response.[5] On December 14th yet another thread was made by someone skeptical and confused about people saying they were dragons. Asking if it was a past life experience or if they were claiming to be actually nonhuman somehow. One person stated they had been a dragon in a past life somehow but did not claim to be anything other than human in this life while another person claimed dragons had taken human form to hide from humans.[6] However, its unknown how many, if any, of these people at the time were being serious. Further, after this rush in of threads by various people claiming to be dragons somehow the topic faded away to only an occasional thread as topics about fictional and mythical dragons cropped up. However topics by such people claiming to be dragons in some way or people asking questions to such people continue to crop up off and on.
In June 18 1994, an attempt was made to poll the newsgroup for people who human and dragon. Rapidly, someone popped in adding that they were a phoenix not a human or dragon. The next day someone created another thread to add on to the poll. A dozen or so people ended up replying and of them over half of the responders claimed to be a dragon rather than human with one phoenix and two “other dragon-mix.”[7][8]
On July 25, 1994 someone tried to get a “Dragon Code” started by posting some ideas on what it could contain. During the 90s, a number of communities and subcultures had begun creating and, to some extent or another, using “codes” to denote certain information relevant to this group. These codes consisted of a string of characters and numbers which meant certain levels of involvement or relevance in certain internets and hobbies related to their topic. Some ideas put forward by the thread creator had included one for diet preferences and another being how many people in their knew they were a dragon. All preferences had some amount of dragons humor and/or roleplay. However, the thread did not appear to gain much attention at all.[9]
According to O. Scribner’s source for the Otherkin Timeline, ExistingPhantom who created the newsgroup, it was around September 1994 that the newsgroup people began having coming forward proclaiming that they actually were dragons.[10] On ExistingPhantom’s overview of the early history of AFD, he also stated on there as well that around September or by November was when several people began claiming that they were actually dragons.[11] However, threads of people proclaiming that they actually were dragons somehow have been found to exist even before that time frame within the newsgroup. The cause of this discrepancy isn’t exactly clear. The number of threads before the fall of 1994 by self-proclaimed dragons were not as in great of number as after that time, but they do exist.
By 1995, the use of the terms “draconic” and “draconity” had become common use within the draconic community to describe someone who identified as a dragon.[12]
In 1995, Dymus the Daring created a webpage with what he titled “The 100 Point Draconity Corruption Test.” The webpage included a list of various things which were or could be related to dragons or the draconic community in some way or another which could be check marked and would be added up by the website. The webpage was created as a joke and its creator did not feel it should be used as a serious tool in anyway by dragon-identified people or those questioning. The test can be still found today at http://www.armory.com/tests/draconity.html.[13]
In January 1995, Brian Reid ran a survey using data from the various Usenet groups to determine its popularity based on how many members it roughly had and so on. Alt.fan.dragons was ranked 1901st by the Arbitron. It estimated that 41,423 people had the potential to see the group though the actual number of members for alt.fan.dragons was 166. It also concluded that during the January the group received 2,092 posts.[14]
Around October 1996, the first version of the Dragon Code was created by a draconic named Red Dragon and hosted on Baxil’s website. He created it by basing it off the of popular Geek Code which was being used online at the time. It was created so that several letters could represent certain facts or interests about a person in a short amount of space within the draconic community.[15]
On August 7th 1996, the website called Dragonfire.org was created as a companion website to the newsgroup alt.fan.dragons.[16] The website was meant to help as a resource for the newsgroup and other websites and such branching off of the original newsgroup. Specifically for the newsgroup, website included its FAQ, a brief history of the newsgroup, and so on. The website‘s creator was the creator of alt.fan.dragons.[17]
Some time in 1998, a website (hosted through Were.Net) was created called the Anti-Were/Furry Resource. The group sought to bring skepticism and questioning back into various communities. Many of the members were those who had been around the community for some years before the influx of people who were mistaken on the meaning of what the communities were about. The group primarily focused on the fury fandom and were community, but also has several articles over the draconic community and members from the draconic community as well. Within the draconic community on Alt.fan.dragons, reaction to the website was mixed.[18] [19] [20]
On January 1st 1998, the MUCK called Alfandria was created. MUCKs being a kind of online roleplaying game which is based in chats. As the name for the MUCK suggests it came out of alt.fan.dragons. Alfandria is dragon-themed and was created to be accepting of both furries and otherkin.[21]
On January 11th 1998 the website Draconic.com was created by KaniS which still exists today. The website has a forum, a chat, a page about being draconic according to the website, links to various dragon-related websites, and so on.[32]
On April 1 1998, Baxil wrote an article called “Forty-Foot Winged Reptiles Need Your Love, Too” with the subtitle, “One Nexxxus Staffer Speaks Out for Belief, Tolerance, and the Crusade Against Society's ... err ... Dehumanization.” The article was originally printed in an April Fool’s edition of the Daily Nexus (printed as “Daily Nexxxus” as part of the April Fool’s), a student newspaper for the University of California. The article, while a joke, did talk about draconity to an extent as well.[23][24]
Some time before June 1998, the website for Alt.fan.dragons gained an FAQ explaining various things about the usergroup. Within the FAQ at one point on the FAQ discussing how some members claim to be dragons if it is just roleplaying or not, "There are many on the group who are dragons in mind, spirit or body."[25]
On October 11th 1998, the website The Draconity FAQ was created by Baxil.[26]
In January 1999, the Yahoo Group, Real Dragon was created. The group is described as a mailing list for dragons whether a person considered themselves draconic, dragon otherkin, dracanthropes, or so on. The group was created by Tserisa. The group has been very active since it was created and continues to be active with over 750 members as of September 2014.[27]
On June 18th 1999, the website Shadow’s Den was created. The website was a general resource and information on various nonhuman identified groups of people. Interesting to note, the word “otherkin” is not used however in the website.[28] Under its Info section, there are various categories including “Werebeasts,” “Vampires,” “Dragons,” “Fae,” and “Higher Beings.” Under the “Dragons” section there are a few articles describing people with “draconic souls”[29] The website also hosted a forum called, Whispers Messageboard which was open to both weres (the then term for therians), vampires, and others.[30] Overall the website was meant as a resource for the early therian community but included information and was welcoming to other communities as well.
In July 19 1999, Wyrm took over working on the Dragon Code from Baxil (who had been responsibility over it from Red Dragon some years before). Wyrm hosted the Revised Dragon Code on his website.[31]
On April 15th 2000 a Yahoo Group called True Wyrms was created. Described as a place for “those who believe or know that they are dragons.” The group was extremely active from the month it was created and it did not begin to slow down in activity around April 2006. The group however remained generally active for many more years afterward. Interestingly, the description for the group throughout its history included, “We also ask that if you are Otherkin, but *not* a Dragon nor strongly associated with them, that you not join this list. There are many lists out there for Otherkin, but very few for Dragons alone.” [32]
In July 2000, sometime between the 19th and the 31st there was a gathering of draconics in Denver, Colorado. The gathering was called the Denver Dragon Gather.[33][34]
On August 17th 2000, Baxil’s The Draconity FAQ was moved to his new website called The Tomorrow Lands where it remains.[35]
