A History of Plant-Identified People In the Otherkin Communities
People that identify as plants have been rare throughout the history of the otherkin communities. There are far more people who identify as animals for sure than plants. However over the years plant-identified people have appeared here and there in the otherkin community, thought often under various labels given. Here is a list of some of the times such people have been discussed which have been found by us. Though more than likely there are more instances of such people which have simply either not been found by us or such links have be come defunct.
Starting on February 20th and on to March 2nd 1995 the topic of people who identify as plants (or who are simply called wereplants in the thread) were discussed on alt.horror.werewolves. Several people thought the idea was a possibility though didn’t know of any “wereplants” personally. However one person claimed to have met at least three such people.
The website Green Is More Than A Color was last updated on August 3rd 2004 and was possibly created on or around that day. The website defined otherkin, had some information on the creator, and some information on what being a plant-identified person meant to the creator of the website. Dok, the creator of the website, coined the term “greenkin” to describe plant-identified people. This website would exist until some time around the year 2010 when it went offline. Until then it was often the website often often used as a resource for plant-identified people due to the lack of other resources on the matter.
On August 4th 2004, a Livejournal community called Plant / Green ‘Kin was created. The creator of the group wished to create a place for other otherkin who identify as a species from the Plant Kingdom rather than the Animal Kingdom. (The former of which in reference to the therian community which is for Earth animal-identified people.)
Some time in 2006, a personal website for a therian and greenkin by the name Chetaeon was created. The website has a simple article describing therianthropy, their werecard (a set of fields to fill out sometimes used in the therian community up until the mid to late 2000s), and other things relating to their identity. The website has a special page just on being greenkin where Chetaleon talking about discovering the term and stating she identifies as a chestnut oak tree.
Another Livejournal community created was called Woodkin in June 15th 2006 with the creator identifying as a willow. However after only 1 journal entry it also became inactive on August 6 2006. The livejournal community was however linked to the Plant Your Spirit forum, suggesting the creator of the LJ community created the forum as well.
On June 18th 2006, a forum called Plant Your Spirit was created. Its purpose as create a forum specifically for plantkin. However due to the rarity of plantkin the forum didn’t gain many members and the forum quickly died completely in the fall of 2008.
In 2007, the book A Field Guide to Otherkin by Lupa was published. The book was completely over the topic of otherkin and drew her information from a survey she had done so the book would better reflect the beliefs and feelings of at least those who responded. Within the book there is only one mention of plantkin due to only one person who participated in the survey for the book having any identity related to a plant. One of the responders had had a past life as a Lily of the valley (as well as being a kitsune). However, beyond this there is little mention of what plants in human bodies experience in their life. What is mentioned is how the responder noted that they felt plants were “very devoted parents and will put forth great effort to make sure that their offspring get the best start that they can.”
On April 23rd 2008, a thread called “Tree spirits?” was created over the topic of plantkin was created on the Livejournal community simply called Otherkin. The topic posted was that the original poster identified as a tree yet finding no real information on people who just identified as some kind of plant rather than a dryard or other mythical creature connected to plants and was seeking resources. The replies noted that they had seen plantkin before a time or two but didn’t know of any resources for them outside of mythology.
Starting on November 26th 2008, a thread began over the topic of plant-identified people on the Werelist. Originally discussion was focused on how such people can not be “therian” due to the definition of such, but moved on to other discussions over and around plant-identified people. Through out the thread a number of people brought having met a plant-identified person at some point or another. (As of August 2014, the thread had nearly 170 posts).
On July 31st 2010 a thread called “Vegetable kin?” was created on The Otherkin Community on Livejournal. The thread was over the question if it was possible for someone to identify as a vegetable such as turnip. A number of the responders noted there were various beliefs that plants had spirits too just like animals, and a few noted they had seen other kinds of plant-identified people in the past. There was also some discussion on how plantkin could work given the nature of some plant species.
On October 13th 2010, the Otherkin.com forum, a topic called “Plant Otherkin?” was created. In the thread various views on the possible existence and lividly of such identified people was discussed.
Some time around 2012, the Livejournal community, Woodkin was purged, likely by the creator of the group.
